KA24de turbo setup

I've been reading through so that i dont ask a stupid question and everyone goes >> do research. but i'd like to know some info about turbo kits for the ka24det,, 92 fastback 240 s13. if u have to get a manifold made or if u can buy one and then once u have a manifold made can most turbos just fit. like is the manifold the biggest factor when turboing the ka24de? any help is great. thanks.

If you get a "kit" usually a manifold is included in the kit. Likewise, the turbocharger included in the kit has been matched to mount to the manifold flange. Not all turbos use the same flange though.

IMO the biggest factor when turboing ANY car is the state and condition of the engine PRIOR to turbocharging.

Hope that helped

Like |2aine said, the big factor is the condition of the motor. What ever route you go with turbocharging, DO NOT buy the SS Autochrome manifold, it cracks. Boostdesigns.com is your best bet for the money. Full complete kit and even comes with FMIC.

A T25 wont make very much boost on the big 2.4 liter. I suggest a T3 or a T3/T04 from the boostdesigns.com kit.

Well I went ahead and compared the followinf turbo kits available for our motors:

Boost Evolution 1
Boost Evolution 2
Boost Evolution 3
XS Engineering
Greddy
F-Max
NSport

I listed their parts side by side in a spreadsheet, including price, extra features, etc. and some conclusions:

BE1: Lowest cost to go turbo, no fuel upgrades.

BE2: BE1 + RC injectors, fuel rail, and fuel pump. This is the "bang for the buck" choice amongst the kits listed due to content and price point.

BE3: BE2 + pistons and rods. Nice kit, still a bargain compared to the others (see below)

XSE: $2300 more for the same basic equipment as the BE1 kit. OVERPRICED.

GRE: Considered "failsafe", I've heard good stuff about this kit, but $400 more than BE2 and no fuel pump or FMIC.

FMA: $4500 for a kit similar to XS, but with injectors and "turbo oil". Pass.

NSP: If I'm not mistaken, the first "kit" availlable for KA24DE's... features similar to FMA plus a fuel pump, but no injectors. $4k doesn't sound that great a deal anymore.

Notes:

- all kits come with a variant of the t3 or T4 (some hybrids) with the exception of Greddy, which uses their favorite Mitsubishi brand TD06.

- Boost Evo uses SS tubular manifolds and piping; the others use cast iron or steel pieces.

- Greddy is the only kit without an FMIC; add an FMIC and the price goes to BE3 level, but with far less components included.

IMO the Boost Evo kits (especially stage 2) give you a lot for your money. Compared to the other kits, you can get a BE stage 2 and still have $ left over for other, non-addressed upgrades needed when going turbo, i.e. 3" exhaust, new clutch, boost gauge, turbo timer, etc. Personally I'd rock the BE Stage 2; I can't see any advantages with the other kits which cost more when you compare specs side by side.

The only question I would have for Boost Evolution is reliability of their SS manifold and downpipe. The other components are proven, brand name equipment with exception to the manifold and downpipe.

Hope that helped

EDIT: if you want the spreadsheet, IM me I can send it to you (save yourself the time I spent researching LOL)

EDIT 2: Damnit all this research you made me do is making me think about going turbo again.

Next time use the 'edit' button instead of double-posting

I think their kit is good for the price. You might be able to piece one together for less, but if anything goes wrong it's all on you.
