Blacktop or redtop

What is the difference in these motors besides the valve cover color?

Chill man. I am just saying I may be a newbie but I have been reading on this board for quite a while and I know the topic has been discussed quite a few times.

sorry, i wasn't trying to get an attitude, I was just saying that some opinions to me, (if they are not constructive) don't affect me at all.

I understand that. Like I said I am a nebie so I didn't want to give any incorrect info thats what I didn't say anything. I know I find it annoying when you ask a simple question and you get use the search but I was just trying to look out for you. I didn't want to sound like a d*ck or anything. But from what I learned the only real difference is that the blacktops are a little newer engines. In other words, probably have less miles on them but that is not guarnteed.

I think he meant S13 blacktop. The only differences are the valve color and the ECU with remapped fuel flow.

Is there a big difference? I mean is the remapped ecu worth the extra money (if you don't plan on going standalone)?

It's more money because it was used in the S13's later model years. Basically your getting a newer more refined motor with less miles on it

From what I heard it only makes the engine rev smoother. It may provide a very small midrange gain, but not enought to justy only getting a black top. I prefer them though since they're newer and little less noticable.

I think the giant intercooler that i will have on mine will be quite noticable. no one is gonna notice the valve cover until i pop the hood.

Minor differences....

Only thing I keep seeing in difference, is that some of the aftermarket stuff, will specify red or black top S13 SR20DET.

For example the HKS Fcon V-pro. Friend has one dirt cheap, but it's for a red top. Can't use it on the black top.

Horsepower wise the red and black tops run 205ps @ 6400 rpms.

no. turbo's are the ame, as are the injectors...

the S14 and S15 motors (not refered to as blacktops) have diff turbo's than the s13, s15 has diff injectors, and both have diff intake manifolds than the s13...different valve covers.

the s13 black and reds: the blacks ecu is 'reworked'....brackets etc. are cadium plated,....ridges on front of head.....
