5 lug how to for S13
#17
Here's another place for the 5-lug swap. It's a write up with pics and everything. Used S15 hubs and GTO hubs.

newbie
I know everybody hates newbie questions but here it goes. I have been in the Honda scene for awhile then went VW ( I live in Germany working with the U .S. Military) but now I am the proud ownder of a 1989 200sx (or 240sx for you in the U.S). I have a buddy with a totalled s14 and I bought basically everything that has to do with the brakes, and hubs for 100 bucks. There is a reply here that says that I should use the struts from the s14. I just purchased a new set of Intrax lowering springs will these fit on the s14 shocks/struts? If not what exactly do I have to drill to make my stock ones work. I am looking for the easiest way to do this conversion. What will need to be changed on my car to make this work? I heard that the brake lines need to be changed, but I also have the original brake lines still attached to the calipers. Will these work? PLEASE HELP THE NEWBIE
Also the SR20 motor is not easy to find over here. Is there some good parts out there for the CA18det? Thanks

ok, now for a real noob question....
I have read and read about people doing the five lug conversion and did a search for the info I am after without a ton of definitive luck...so here goes...
Besides wheel selection, what are the advantages of the five lug conversion?
From the info I have found, you can do a brake upgrade without converting to five lug, so this is the reason for my question.

More wheels are availiable in larger sizes for this 5-114.3 pattern, and you get 4 piston alum calipers and huge brakes. Best part is that if you have a good source for the parts it's much cheaper than a aftermarket big brake kit.

I know the rear s14 hubs bolt right up to the stock setup. But I heard that the fornts do not bolt right up to the stock spindles. I heard that I would need stock s14 spindles and ball joints, and that I would then need s14 struts for the front. I keep reading conflicting posts, so I just want to get some stuff straight. (these are questions, not facts)
FOR THE REARS:
- do the hubs bolts right up
- what bearings do I need to buy for these hubs (s14 or s13)
- can I have my stock brakes redrilled at a mahine shop, or will this not work for some reason?
FOR THE FRONTS:
- what all will I need. If I can bolt up the s14 hub straight onto my stock setup, mint. If not, what do I need?
- what bearings (s14 or s13)
- again, will the brakes fit (machine drilled to 5 lug)
thank you. I know most will just say "n00b", but remember, answering one n00bs questions cancel out most n00b questinos to follow.

Some info I have.
The S14 front spindle uses a 32mm nut.
While the S13 front spindle uses a 30mm nut.
Even though the S14 HUB can slide on S13 spindle its not safe.
Use S13 bearing.
More info
For S13 Rear conversion use:
S14 SE or Z32 N/A Hubs
S14 and S13 rear rotors are the same size, except one is 4 lug while the other is 5 lug.
For S13 Front conversion use:
S14 SE Hubs, must be used the S14 SE Spindles and S14 Ball Joint in the control arm. (must be pressed in)
As well as Attain hubs, same with GTO hubs fit S13.
As far as suspension goes.
Front suspension total length is longer on S14 by about 1/2 - 1" the bolts are larger as well.
Control arm ball joints different
Lower control arm different length by about 1/2"
Tension rod different length(stock)
Tie rod/tie rod ends different (stock)
Rear suspension much longer on s14(stock)
Alex thanks for learning me.

OK, I admit it I said I wasn't going to convert to 5 lug but... Attain 5 lug conversion for the front and New Z32 30mm calipers have been orrdered. Still looking for a place to get the rears thought.

You can use it but remember;
You need to use S14 ball joint in control arm other wise it is not safe.
Also the S14 bolts that hold the shock in place are 14mm bigger that S13 which is 12mm so you need to have the holes drilled out or change the lower bracket if you have coilovers.

The bottom bracket(gold piece with holes) of the FRONT coilover need to be replaced with S14 if it is S13 because the S13 bolt holes are 12mm and S14 are 14mm.
Again as stated for the rear you DO NOT NEED the S14 rear knuckle it is the same as S13, the S14 HUB bolts right on the S13 knuckle.
Your making it to complicated.
