Building a SCCA Autox car (ST class)
#137
The good news: replaced the rear main seal on the tranny a while back, and now the seal on the diff because both were leaking. MAN does it feel good to have a non-leaky car
The bad news: I got the flu bug this weekend and my throat is killing me (so bad that my gf is here taking care of me and I'm using the speak'n'spell program on my computer to talk to her ), so I'm having to miss the autox event in Tucson today, not all bad though because it's suppose to be raining there today so it would kind of suck to drive 2 hours just to autox in the rain anyway.
I'll be ordering the parts to build my own ST legal header as soon as my tax return comes in (thanks for the $8,000 tax credit for buying a house Obama ), it should actually be relatively cheap with a $160 header/downpipe and a $60 cat. I will also be ordering my underdrive pulley from ASP, and then it's finally time for the tune and I'll get some numbers to you guys.

I have talked to several guys that run them on NA engines (including Jason Rhodes, 2005 ST class National Champ, he drove a 240) and they all said the same thing. Just buy from a reputable company and you will be fine and the pulley does give a small increase in power. The ASP brand name was reccommend to me by a couple of them.

The cat I want comes in 1.75", 2", and 2.25", I'll get 2.25" since my piping is 2.5". ASP only sells the crank pulley, no accessory pulleys, so since no one can recommend a reliably company to me for a full pulley set I'll be sticking with just the crank pulley for now (but I would like to do them all some day). Just a note, many people have told me ASP is a quality parts maker and very reliable, and they have tested all their products for almost every car they sell the pulleys for. For the 240 they claim a 9hp gain with their pulley (at the crank).

OBX Makes a full pulley set. So does NST, but that ones a little more expensive.
OBX = ~$85 for the Access. Pulley's (No Crank) also they don't state what % of Overdrive there Pulley's are.

Ya I have seen the OBX one, but the the NST, have a link to it? I have seen a couple different brands out there for accessory pulleys, but no one can tell me if they are reliable AND if they give a decent increase or not? I'll try to ask around and do more research as time goes on and see if I can't so more info.

NonStopTuning.com
they Underdrive the W/P and P/S by 15%
I would also get it over the ASP Pulley because the Offset the Alt. by Overdriving it 15% so it properly charges the batt rather then needing to spend more time in the upper RPM's to get the same charge.

Hey everybody, sorry I've been away so long, been busy with work and everything. Any way, the last event wasn't anything to write home about, I still can't seem to break mid-pack, I got a time of 45.512, with a score of 906, 3rd out of 6 in class, 48th out of 112 over all.
I still can't seem to exactly nail down the problem of why I can't improve. I was unable to have a pro ride with me this time (I had to run in the first run group, and no one is allowed to ride along before you run because it's considered an unfair advantage, therefore no one could ride along with me). I while driving I'm having a hard time feeling what the car's problem is, but I think it's actually understeer. I'll have my gf take some video from the side line next time to try and see.
Sorry but no video's this time, a week before the event my gf borrowed my camera mount and broke it! Luckily the company offers a free warranty replacement and it just came in the mail a few days ago, so more videos to come!
On a separate note, once my tax return comes in it's time to put in the headers and pulley and get my ECU tuned. Now a couple people have told me that because of my limited mods (intake, header, exhaust, underdrive pulley, and s13 cams) that I should simply advance timing and be done with it, not do a tune at all. Any opinions on this? Maybe Vinnie can chime in here too about this...

I know I came in a little late on this but...... STAY AWAY from underdrive crank pulleys. It destroys crank bearings and if it were a high HP KA it woould snap the crank snout off. Underdrive Crank pulleys come smaller in diameter than the stock pulleys as well, which cause issues to powering steering, and also lowers the voltage to the alternator per RPM.
With timing advance you will want to use a higher octane fuel that burns slower, since teh ignition process starts earlier, this should also lower EGT which should raise HP and torque. I however would not advance timing for street use as it can raise idle a tad, and also increase hydro carbon emissions.
The ecu essentially increases injector pulse width as it see's that timing from the crank angle sensor is brought back in stroke 2 of the combustion process.
However I also didn't see anything in the rules for teh st class in modifying injection as long as it is OEM jecs injectors. Which in any case I would just do an sr20det injector swap, run the engine on E85, and retard timing 2~3* for an instant 10 more wheel HP.

Ok thanks guys, I can't do a AEM EMS though because unfortunately standalones are illegal in my class, put I'll keep looking for a some one reliable for a tune.
As far as the underdrive pulley, I spoke with Jason and another 240 owner and neither one of them ever had any issues with the pulley, even after a couple years years of tracking their cars.
