whats easier? sr20det or ka-t?

hey so im pretty sure i will be buying a bone stock 92 240 sx within the next week. I have a integra with a b16a swap right now and don't know much about nissans. My question is would it be better overall to boost the ka24de motor which i'm pretty sure is in it or would it be more worthwhile to drop in a sr20det swap? thanks

honestly ka-t is goin to be alot cheap kas are a dime a dozen if you blow one you can pick a new one up for a few hundred parts are alot easier to find for kas but if you have the money and want the jdm aspect go for the sr. the sr is also easier to boost and a stock sr can boost higher than a stock ka

I would see what needs to be fixed on the 15 year old car first. Also get used to it before you feel like you need a lot of power. Both engine setups are good but both have benefits and un-benefits. Personally I would go KAt because as mentioned they are lots cheaper if you need a new one. (and I guess they are more legal)

yah, none of this would be happening untill summer, i'm just trying to learn more about 240's. Also, where do you guys buy parts from? honda stuff's easy to get from places like inlinefour weksos and places like that. Where do you guys go for quality aftermarket parts (not ebay junk).

after doing some reading on this site, i think i am going to go with the sr20det next summer, partyly because the car will have higher miles and a fresh new motor would probably work out better. Also, i was thinking of possibly buying a complete jdm front clip with the dash, motor, and s13 front end. Are there any websites where you can buy a complete front clip including the body panels?

japanmotorimport.com / jgycustoms.com / jspecauto.com

all good companies. I bought my rb from japanmotorimport.com and had no problems and have bought many things from jgycustoms.com

I really dont like front clips. cause ur paying for body parts that u know no idea what condition they are in. no reason for a RHD dash unless u wanna do a conversion. Thats just me personally. If u do buy a SR make sure it comes with a uncut wiring harness.

the SR would be used also, it's not a "new" engine, and nobody knows what the mileage of the car was, or how the car was driven. keep reading before you do anything big, i'm not leaning either way

chubbza, i do know that it is obviously not brand new, i have bought a jdm b16a motor swap for my integra which had around 30k miles on it. And many websites compression and leak test the motors they sell so you don't get a junk motor. You don't know how the car the motor was in was driven, but they generally have between 15 and 60 thousand miles on them, which i'm sure you know, i'm just saying i know this. And also after reading i found that buying clips for the body panels is dumb b/c they're in garbage condition usually, so i would not be buying the clip for that reason i would be buying it for the rhd dash components b/c i plan on swaping to rhd as well. Thanks everyone. Again none of this would be happening till over the winter/spring

this guy has the idea...drive it around for a few months, listen for odd sounds, weird diving etc. thats what i did i didnt mod my car for the first 3 months and saved money just in case anything did brake i would have money to fix it. nothing broke so i had all that money to go toword mods...and you shouldnt worry about boost yet, first you want to prep your engine for that first buy all the things you would need to do so...

^^^yes freshen up your car first (bushings, endlinks, anything else rubber that wears out) , then suspension (coilovers, struts and spring combo) , then boost. BTW KA-T is pretty much the way to go. The reason that the SR can boost more is simply because is was MEANT to be turboed, so it comes with a low-compression setup. If you took the turbo off of an SR , it's a duck. If you boost a KA 6-7 lbs. that would be prime and would be cheaper and faster then an SR. NA compression + Turbo =

I'm biased towards KA-T, only because I was KA-T...lol. It's a blast to drive, but at the end of the day it's going to be up to you to figure out what kind of setup you want. KA-T is definitely budget friendly, but if you have the money and want to get an SR, then go for it.

I only chose to go KA-T, because internals wise, the KA has an iron block, while SR is aluminum. Stroke on the KA engine is longer so that = more torque. Last, you get more displacement from the KA engine, which was a big plus for me also. Someone did already mention that these engines are a dime a dozen, so finding replacement parts is easy. If you want to boost more then you'd probably just have to change out the pistons to something forged, and maybe a headgasket, and you should be good to boost higher.

I made slightly better numbers than the SR20 at 7lbs. About 207hp and 237tq. But like I said; I'm biased to KA-T.

Still, let us know if we can help with anything be it SR or KA. Good luck man.

rb25det is the easiest j/k. I think sr20det is easier than building a ka-t. although I do want a ka-t.

yeah i would go with the Sr20DET engine because i was reading in this one magazine that with the right parts, you can get the 240 up to 490hp if i am correct. That would be a beastly machine!
