just bought first 240

Hello everybody, i recently bought a 93 240sx coupe for $400 and i had a couple questions. I've been doing my research but i cant find a kind of description on this "death rattle" ive seen in numerous posts.

Also about my car its got 2 problems that ive noticed(not counting the primered front end, filthy interior, and what appears to be a fart pipe under the back end).

1) When starting the car it knocks or rattles not sure which is a better description of the noise its making but only does it when starting up.

2) While the car is idling it has intermittent knock, and being as it idles very smooth and only makes the noise every once in a while, it kind of rules out piston or bearing knock as they would be all the time.

A couple things im going to try first(since they are cheapest) is going to be running some injector cleaner through the car since its apparently been sitting for months. Also gonna fill it with high grade gas(some of the rattle could be octane ping\knock.

If anyone has any suggestions on what to try please let me know and thank you.

yeah poke around, there are TONS of threads regarding idle problems with our cars. The rattling noise you're hearing is possibly the timing chain guide (pretty much every one of us encounters this problem at one point or another), just search it and u'll find out more. BTW, are you a real doctor? Just curious...

Is the timing chain rattle kind of like an on and off tapping kind of noise kind of curious and hoping its just something like that. You know something more annoying than it is to worry about.

yeah i had that problem and problem 10 others that have been fixed. Odds are there is nothing wrong with your timing belt but rather your clutch is on verge of going to shyt (buring out). The cheapest clutch that you could get to replace a stock one is about $600, but an upgraded clutch may only cost another $150 b/c of growing popularity of the 240 everywhere not just in japan. (i.e. stock hood for 95 240 costs like 430 but a carbon fiber costs just under 400 go figure).

Unfortunately last night i pulled off the valve cover and there are 2 valves sunken down in, indicating a boken spring or a bent rod . I was hoping for something easy. Now i just have to figure out how much its gonna cost to repair.(hopefully its cheap i only paid 400 for the car.
