what are the "side effects" of a poorly fitting radiator cap?

Here is a picture of the bad Radiator Mouth, what do you guys think.
We were thinking about putting some High Temp Silicon around it to make it seal better. Its hard to get that stuff smooth in there though, maybe because it drys kinda rubbery it will be okay if its not perfectly smooth.

i put the silicon around the mouth of the radiator and now it gets pressure, so i guess that was it. also you don't hear that sound in the overflow when you squeeze the radiator hose. we tried bleeding the cooling system today don't know if we did it right, gonna have to look it up and probably do it again. Thanks again to FuriousZ for the Help. i'll take a picture of the repair tomorrow or something.

notice how you only have half a circle on the filler neck, that's your problem. the silicone will hold for a while but i'd avoid any long trips until you replace the radiator. the other problem is that you're blocking off the reservoir and in doing so increasing core pressure. so now you run the risk of having your radiator blow up. and possible engine damage from over heating.
you were better of before but if you don't plan or getting a replacement radiator soon at least remove the thermostat. that will help some.

its just a little bit of high temp silicon around the inner circle there were you see the half circle is, just to smooth it out so the radiator cap would seal right. the overflow hole is still open and shouldn't the spring in the cap still work the same way? letting coolent in the reservoir when the pressure gets too high? when the car cools down i'll open it and take a picture, i just got home from work.
