Unhappy starter not contacting flywheel Help!!!

I am having a problem and I need help. My car is a 1992 240sx 5speed and when I try to crank it the starter makes a grinding noise but it is not making contact with the flywheel. (the engine is not turning over) I tried another starter and it made a whistling noise, almost like a turbo, and didn't contact the flywheel either. I spent the whole day with my friend disconnecting the transmission, inspecting everything and when we put it all back together it is doing the same exact thing. What can cause this, I am desperate for a solution.

Was the other starter new, sounds like something may be wrong with both of them...is the flywheel maybe missing teeth?

It isn't the starter it is the ignition (probably shorting out or grounding out, most probable). Something is faulty when you twist the key/ignition. This happens on almost all high mileage Nissans..... You can also check all your relays as well. FSM will guide you through your problems......

It seems to me that somehow your starter is not getting enough juice form the battery. try the cable conections on the starter as well as the cable itself. Try this: Get a good cable (like a AMP cable or a groung kit cable) and plug it directly to the power suply for the Starter, then conect another smaller cable to the signal wire for the starter. this "Signal cable" has a small conector and its screwed onto the starter. If that doesn't work, I don't know man. but If you have the engien out, try makign it work outside and looking at it.

When batteries are dead, the starters usually grind but don't start. Try changing the battery or chargin it.
