ideal powerband for drifting
So i've been wondering what's more useful in drifting. torque? (s14 3k - 4.4k rpm) or hp (s14 5.5k) or would you rev even higher.
This question applies to all cars. i just happen to own a s14 that's why i ask.
I ask because i want to build an amateur drift car and was wondering if i needed more low end or high end power. Also where are most drifts initiated as far as rpm is concerned? 3k? 4k?

From my personal experience if you want drifting power getting a good amount of midrange torque is great. Gets acceleration better, and shifts more HP in the higher RPM for the KA.
I've adjusted my advancement to 24BTDC, and am using an aluminum flywheel to get the quick off the hook burnouts.
About 2700RPM is when the power kicks in and at about 6700RPM would be about time to shift. Peak power feels like it starts to drop at about 6300RPM.

for drifting i believe your gonna stay closer to the top of your rpm's.... you want your wheels to keep spinnin so you keep driftin, traction is bad, hp is what is gonna keep your wheels spinnin to give you a nice drift... but again with what rpm's is best for your vehicle is also gonna have to take into consideration the amount of power your car makes.....

well i've been watching drift bible over n over n over again. I understand the torque and power curve is much diff on a silvia than on the 240sx but it seems to me keichi initiates the drift from 3600 (when the tires break loose) and on.
Is that midrange torque?
I'm asking because i'm trying to figure out what kind of tuning i would need for drifting. More low end, more mid range, or more high end? Should i sacrifice some low end torque(2k to 4500k) for some power up at the top end (4500-6500)?
Oh yeah, it would help alot if you guys use rpm's (to be specific) instead of low end, mid range, and high end. Thanks!

The distributor timing is calculated at wich time the chamber will detonate in the cycle.
That means the crank is positioned at 24 degress before the piston hits top dead center, that would be the time of detonation......

Some love low end torque, and some like Top end power.

Thanks for the replies vinnnie. I was asking this because i wanted to swap cams from the 91 to my s14 but i was trying to figure out if the 240/248 would be more ideal than the 248/232. i was thinking the first would be more ideal for h.way driving and the second for drifting.

Actually for your s14 you would want the 248/248, use 2 exhaust cams from the 91-94, for your s14... An evenly match flow design to the cam lobe, will make it a beast...........
The engine itself will still have a good amount of torque due to the smaller porting done to the exhaust side......

Ive thought of that too but i also read somewhere that the 248/248 doesnt make much power at all and actually lose some hp. I don't know.. this is all hearsay but i trust those who have done it before me.

They show you how to install the 2 exhaust cams for the KA24de....
If Jim wolfe is willing to give some tricks to the tuner trade I know it's one of the better cheaper set ups.........
