Head & Valve Gasket Replacement
I'm planning on replaceing the head and valve gasket within the next couple weeks.
I'm trying to find any documented real life experience that could assist me on my way. I do have the Haines Manual, and complete motor nut and bolts manual which will also be helpfull.
I was also advice to buy at 60k tune-up kit ... anyways, let me know of any suggestions or links... THANKS

60k you should replace your spark plugs, check your wires and cap, btu its prob just as easy to replace them. clean yout TB, and flush your cooling system.... check your belts..... check your air filter is you dont have a CAI... basically just look it over to see what is bad.... You dont need to replace your water pump unless its leaking, but you can for preventative maintenance. If you feel you want to replace it so you wont have to worry abotu it later go for it.... a new water pump should come with a gasket. As for the head gasket... you can remove the head wihtout removing the intake or exhaust manifold, but you may as well remove them so you are not fighting them... I assume you are new to the mechanical world since you are asking this... so you will need intake manifold gasket.. exhaust manifold gasket... valve cover gasket... cylinder head gasket... or you could go the easy route and go to the parts store and tell them you need a top end gasket kit wich will include all the gaskets from the cylinder head up. That way if you are not sure you will need it you will have it anyway.

Top end gasket kit is what I was looking for.
I'm not new to the mechanical world - I'm a mechanical engineer - and that means I'm not the greatest mechanic
I haven't done anything but basic stuff on the 240 so I wanted to ask if there was anything out of the ordinary. For example - I saw in another thread that the head bolts take a 10mm allen socket?? Knowing stuff like that prior to starting the job is a huge advantage. I don't like having to stop the job to go to the parts store or tool store.
Thanks

Another thread mentioned the Allen head bolts on the DOHC -
I hate to fix this pig - rather just swap an engine/5 sp but I don't have the cashola - and I need something to get on the track ..
Any idea of a link to a FSM for bolt sequence etc? I can wrench ok but I know myself and if I don't read over the FSM I'll be cursing all day.
'preciate the nOOb help

how to get the drain plug out of the block - super frozen
and does the lower timing belt have to come off? that means oil pan?
seems like a lot of work for a head gasket
on a side note the cams look good and there is no sludge in the top end although that could be from the 40 minute drive with the head gasket blown and tons of fuel in the oil
major gas fume hangover

to answer brakeguru: if you have fuel in your oil I would not think your head gaskit is the problem.
do you have water in the oil (milkshake for oil)? if not I would check injectors to see if one or more are stuck open or leaking.

major fuel in the oil - and huge white smoke out of the exhaust
when you run the car the gas smell is unbelievable - hmmmm
i was thinking that the gasket was blown from a water passage to the cylinder and to the outside of the engine
hmmmmm
what to do
the oil was not milky - just super gassy

spark plug looks almost normal - a little wet
the injector plug does not snap on like the others - although it does connect cleanly
The engine was dropped in at 100 k by a fool - and then another guy was paid to clean up the mess - he did a timing chain job
