A/C Compressor questions

uhhh yeah, so I dont know where this topic should go... but since I drive a 91 NA 240, I'll put it in NA...

my AC is not working... it hasnt since I bought the car, and I've looked into this a little bit. its hella expensive to convert to 134, so I was wondering if its possible to say, find a mashed S14 at the junkyard and swipe the compressor and mechanisms out of it, and install in the S13? seems to me like it would be, same engine and all, and a heck of a lot cheaper I'd imagine. is it legal? I dont know why it wouldnt be, but there are some strange laws out there.

assuming I can find a wrecked one with working AC. hmmmm...

Didn't seem that expensive to me... I converted mine last week for about $165...

Of course I know the shop owner, and did all of the work myself, so the cost was just for materials...

see, I dont know any shop owners, and my dad is no longer refrigerant certified, so he cant help.

did you just get your system recharged with 134, or did you replace the whole works? mine is leaky, and the error trace on it shows a faulty compressor, so I'm just going to replace it all with new parts that are already 134 compliant.

anyone know for sure?

I had a seized compressor, so I replaced that.

Otherwise I put 134 fittings on the lines, and recharged with fresh 134. The vents blow a cold 34 degrees F after the change. Might not be right by the EPA, but if you don't tell them...

i think its illigal to take appart an ac system without draining it properly, even if its dead.

thats true, it all has to leak out on its own. you cant knowingly vent refrigerant into the atmosphere, but if your car is leaking it out then nobody cares.

or something...

all I know is that it sucks to work with, sucks to work on, and sucks to try to get rid of. blah.

I'm sure it is illegal to vent it to the air. As for my system, I properly re-cycled the refridgerant as I had access to the equipment. If his system is leaking now, it'll be empty before too long...

Of course have you ever dealt with Freon in a scientific environment? It pools in low places and doesn't mix with atmosphere. You can fill an open garbage can with gaseous Frean and not lose any... Just don't stick your head in it...
