timing chain HELP

my car has been making a loud fan sounding noise
so i took it to a shop

they said the timing chain is a little loose and is rattling against something....
they wanted 2500 to fix??? IS THAT JUST INSANE?
IS THIS Really the problem?
if so is that how much it would cost?
another option?
how long will the engine last?

Could be causing it, I'd have to actually hear the sound. I know the chain is pretty expensive to have a shop fix it, but I don't know what the average price is. It is a pretty easy fix to do yourself if you have the time, or you could just find a new engine and throw that in there if you really don't feel like fixing it.

Chain guides anyone?

Shop says it's rubbing on something...making a ticking noise...sounds like timing chain guides to me...

Yea I agree with Preston, take out your upper timing chain guides and fix your timing chain tensioner and that should fix the problem. Myself and most people with KA24s with high mileage have had the same problem. Whatever you do don't pay $2500 to get it fixed, you might as well get another engine if you were going to spend that much.
