lifters clicking please help

i bought a 93 240sx convertable the other day for about $2500 from this mechanic guy and it seemed pretty clean. it ran ok didnt make strange noises. the car itself had like 250k miles on it but the engine and tranny have been replaced with new ones. i asked him for documentation on the new engine and transmission but he said he only had that for the transmission. any way we needed this car badly for my mom and sister because her old car had to be retired. the guy told us the engine and transmission had about 60k miles on them so i trusted him. when i was buying it i noticed that there was a weird fast clicking sound when you popped the hood and it was running you could definately hear it and he said it was the lifters because he was using 5w30 oil instead of 10w30 oil but i dont know. should i worry about the lifters clicking or is it something thats easy to fix ?

Might just need the valves adjusted. Best thing to do would be to take it to another mechanic to get it looked at. If the car is running good other than the sound Im sure its something minor. But I would definately take to get looked at before you start having more problems.

thanks ill take it into a nissan dealership to get those done because i dont trust any of the mechanics who work at that shop. i was also wondering how much it would cost to replace the timing belt on that 93 240sx. someone once told me you should replace it every 60,000 miles but it sounds like a pretty big job. this car is going to be a daily driver how reliable is it ?

we have lifters??? i did not know this... damn where are mine??? cus ummmmm i had my motor apart and i did not find any lifters... if the valves need to be adjusted because of the tick then that should be done by someone who knows what they are doing...they are actually adjusted by removing shims on top of the valves... and replacing the shims with the correct thickness shim to take up the slack... and to answer the timing belt question... we have a chain and not a belt... and replacing them at 60,000 seems a little soon to me...

I actually am getting the same sound from my engine. Wasn't sure what it was. I thought it was just my fan because that's what it sounds like and ****. Everytime i accelerate, u can hear the clicking going faster. My pops said it was the lifters but i wanna know what you guys think. Thanks.

i'm pretty sure only v8's and v6's have them... he might have just said that cuase he didnt know the real problem or worked on different types of engines i could be wrong though. Judging from everyone else, it sounds like it's your valves. Either way, get it checked out by antoher mechanic

No lifters. Shims are used just like Toyotas. It's pretty time consuming to get the valves adjusted but the good thing is, you should RARELY need this done.

One piece of advice, being an ex-mechanic. NEVER BUY A CAR FROM A MECHANIC. We know how to make cars run well for a short period of time (i.e. when selling) to hide things. I've never done it myself but know of many that have. Sorry, it's the truth!

Just my $.02.

The ticking could be your injectors, after they are only a solenoid that lifts the little ball thingy up to allow the fuel to go by! Every time they are pulsed the tick could be the ball inside the injectors...
