You find a smog shop that will do it for you. Talk to people find out who. Give them $250 handshake.

It's possible that the RB25DET is legal.

I don't know how it works, but Motorex has sold cars equipped with the RB25DET in the US, legal for road use here.

I have no idea how to find out if you could use their work for your purposes.

From what I read before, once any company goes through the effort and expense to legalize a motor for highway use in the US, it becomes 'legal.'

Swapping that motor into a car of the same class will also be legal as long as all emissions controls from the original car are retained and it is swapped into the same type of vehicle. I don't know if Motorex Skylines are classed as coupes or sedans. If they are coupes, then you should be able to use their work in certifying the motor to validate your swap into a 240.

The money they spend on the cars is mostly to get the chassis to comply with US safety regulations - bumpers, glass, possibly side impact beams. This is the stuff you would have to do to legalize a 180sx or Silvia, but the 240 already meets US safety standards so this stuff is not necessary for us.

To my knowledge, only one state (CA) has an underhood inspection by people knowledgeable enough to even know the motor isn't meant for the car. Even MA and NY (city area) where they have the 'rolling road' emissions dynos do not subject the cars to an underhood inspection even though they hold them to the same emissions standards as CA.
