my 240 is having a similar problem. Ive spent over 200 bucks in pieces and parts trying to make it run right. Pretty much this is how it goes. The car had to be serviced, so i took it apart (including the distributor) and when i put it back together i didnt drive it for a couple years. I went to drive it this year (it still has working a/c ) and it runs like crap. To make a long story short, i think it is the crank angle sensor. This is because when i run the car, and advance the timing as far as it will go, it still doesnt run quite right, and when i take the distributor out and rotate it 1 tooth, if i retard the timing all the way it runs too fast, and still not right. Ive put fresh 93 octane gas in it, fuel system cleaner, spark plugs, wires cap and rotor, and fuel filter. You think the crank angle sensor is whats causing the problem?
