How can I clean my headlights?

IF theres already a thread for this I apologize, but I didnt see anything when I searched. What the deal is, is that my left headlight is dirty on the inside. I tried to pop off just the clear part, but I couldnt figure out how to get just that part off. I am going to be brief cause my pc likes to kick me off alot lately. So how can I get my headlight shiny again like it just rolled of the lot. I dont know why, but only my left headlight is the only dirty one. Also, something Id like to do in the future is put 1997 240sx lights on my car. The 1996 ones just look too soft imo. Would that be something hard to do? I dont need to do it anytime soon, so I will probably just wait untill I find one at a junkyard to do it.

Hey thanks, I managed to find a thread that let me know what I could clean it with. However, I assume that im going to have to take off the hole entire head light assembly. Is there no way to just pop off the the clear part?

you dont need to take the assembly off
all you have to do is polish the outside of the lens so no need to take apart the lamps. i used silver polish on my friends car and then waxed and it looks almost new.

if you want to do a thorough job, it's not that difficult or time consuming to take off the headlight... 2 10mm bolts behind the center grille, and 2 10mm nuts on the outside edge behind the corner lights. The grille pops off with 2 pop screws, the corners pop off with 1 top secrew each.

Yea I took off the assembly today, it was sooo easy. I noticed that there was a little something on the lens, but I didnt think anything of it. After not being able to clean it for a while I took it to an auto shop. They told me that someone had put clear coat on the lens, and they had no idea how toget it off without damaging the light. I used some nail polish remover, and that seemed to get a little bit off but not enough to be able to polish it. Then I used mineral spirits, same story. So, does anyone have any ideas? Unless I can get the coat off, theres no way I can polish them. I might just have to get a new one.

You can try a mixture of 50/50 denatured alcohol and acetone... we used to use that to take paint off of transparent plastic, and it worked... then a good polishing with metal polish should make it nice and crystal again

Cool ill try that. I dont know about the metal polish though, I used silver polish on my mums headlights, after cleaning them. And it didnt really seem to do anything at all. Should I have used a buffer?

most of the people who have had success getting the "yellowish" hue off of their headlights say metal polish is the best. I gues a buffer would yield better results as long as you don't press too hard and end up melting the headlight
