frame rail rust

Is there anyone out there, that has come across this prob. This is my first 240, and i'm not about to get a new one cuz of it.

I live in Toronto/CA, (so rust is nothing new up here), i'm looking for any kind of advice on welding, or even a shop that can do it. I need it done or I cant get it cert. I've talked to a couple peeps, and for some reason they dont wanna touch it...any reason for this?

Anyways, this is going to be the first of many questions, so thanks in advance.

Rob

P.S. if i'm in the wrong forum, please move...

i had the same prob. living in buffalo, the rails are a soft as is so i just grinded out the rust my self and used thin sheet metal and welded it myself witha 110 mig welder that you can probally rent. i think the reason nobody will do it because they dont want hte liability. like i said the rails seem tobe pretty soft.

what gauge of sheet-metal did you use? i'm guessing the thicker the better?

thanks again

yeah i am experianceing the same and thats the same idea i had in mind! also the other rail is real squish so iwas either going to do the same over there or maybe inject it with expanding foam to stiffin it up, but i am defenetly gunna weld some sheet metal on the rusting one!!

and i also would like to know what gauge u used!!!

i would not use expanding foam because it hold water adn will eventually cause more rust i used 14 gauge steel but depending on the welder the thicker the better i would think. hit never hirts to over kill unless your worried about gaining a few pounds

Ya they really start to rust right up on the frame close to the front wheel. I've had a few buddies get rid of them for that reason.
