custom exhaust vs brand named exhaust
3 in piping with a universal muffler .... this cat back exhaust system lets me choose to have 2 or 3 or 4 or more bends... offcourse i m gonna get 2 bends.... and i get to choose to get aluminized or SS piping offcourse SS is more money.... but the end cost is less than half the money for a retail brand named exhaust system.... what to go with.... brand named exaust systems like apexi n1 or custom.... gimme ur input...

i say go custom not much difference and helps to use your money else where along side it, unless your wanting to get a rx-mag or something which then i would say go brand name because the rx actaully has a use (quiet sound)

I had a Blitz exhaust on mine before. mind you it was made for an S14. but, it still didn't fit right and the hangers were in the wrong spot. so, now I have a custom and it fits PERFECTLY. 1/2 the price of a brand name.

if you can get by with a custom exhaust with the same amount of power, but is more cost effective........i don't understand what the debate is over
really...get a custom, I did and I have no regrets whatsoever with my exhaust. Love the sound and the look. Love the cost better!!

thanks for the input... i m going custom but i need to know SS or aluminized... i mean the answer is easy ... SS but those muffler shops charge like a **** load for SS... anyone know a place wehre i can buy a 10 ft SS tube for cheap and just take it to my friends dads muffler shop... he even said 200 bucks for aluminized... and my muffler from ebay for 65 bucks... 265 :-(

PERSONAL OPINION: For the record, IMO it's not just the name you pay for. You get things that don't come with a custom made setup at a local shop.
- Material specifications
- Vehicle-specific fitment and routing
- Dyno testing and tuning
- Real world testing and tuning
- Competition-envoronment testing
- Manufacturer's warranty
- Quality control
Also factor in worldwide reputation in both public market and track outings. The Japanese are known for having their culture deeply rooted in motorsports, with companies shelling out millions for specific, one-off goals such as fastest to 400m, Time Attack, etc.
PERSONAL DISCLAIMER 1: Now before anyone says anything, I'm not saying that all quote/unquote "brand name" exhaust companies do this (maybe Blitz didn't, from the story above). I do know that the more recognized companies such as Apex-i and Greddy put in more than a handful of money and time and effort to create a product that is reliable, performs to claimed numbers, and attractive. Even HKS uses hours and hours of countless data to determine the most ideal pipe size, bend points, muffler packing volume, and muffler size.
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: I've had Greddy exhaust before, HKS Exhaust before, Apex-i exhaust before, and custom stainless steel exhaust before, and personally I don't see how you can compare a brand name exhaust vs. a $100 muffler shop job. All of the brand name versions I've had (on 3 different cars) fit perfect, came with stainless steel hardware, gaskets, and I've never had any problems. I have a sorta-custom job on my car at the moment, but it was one of those quickie $100 temporary things.
EXAMPLE 2: My brothers HKS exhaust from 1996 sounds exactly the same as it did the first day we installed it. I doubt a generic "Ebay"-ish $40 muffler will last that long... I mean, if the quality of the materials used in a $40 muffler is just as good as a muffler that comes with a properly tuned and designed $400-500 system, then something isn't right.
EXAMPLE 3: I also know a couple people who had tuning garages fabricate a custom exhaust for them, and it cost at least $200. These garages have a long list of track time and testing. I'm not talking about going to a ghetto muffler shop and getting a $100 quick-weld 20 minute job. Some of these custom systems included dyno time and tuning - something I'll bet you can't get out of a majority of muffler shops in SoCal. Some of these full-tested systems cost even more than a brand name system at the time.
NOTE: I only mentioned the $100 reference because Krazyballa and I had a friendly debate on AIM the other day over him getting a cheapo job done vs. saving up and buying a brand name system.
PERSONAL DISCLAIMER 2: Now I'm sure someone can come up with a place that can make a great custom exhaust for $100, but that's not what my post is for. I'm just stating my opinion after reading what everyone (so far) had to say about it.
CONCLUSION: I don't think it's possible to get what Krazyballa wants for $100. If the decision is based mainly on budget concerns, then I guess you try to get as much as you can for what you can afford. I'm not saying I'm rich, but I'd rather save up for a $400-500 system that I know will probably outlast my car
On a personal note, I'm stuck between selecting the RS*R ExMag and the HKS Hi-Power systems for my car but it's cool that everyone is giving input on this subject
If someone decides to flame me, go ahead if it makes you feel better
