crazy idle
I have a 1989 with a ka24e I just put the engine in. bought the engine from a guy that says it has 90,000 on it and its been sitting awhile. the engine was for auto put it in manual. Didn't put air cond. back in because it didn't work any way. The engine has a good bit of blow back. Enough to get a little oil on your hand when you hold it next to oil fill hole but seems to have gotten a lot less. Doesn't smoke at all runs and sounds great. The thing is when you first crank it it idles perfect around 700 rpm's but after it starts to warm up all at one time not graduall it idles up to 1800 to 1900 rpms. If I'm going down the road and put it in neutral or clutch it, it idles perfect but when I slow to a stop it idles right back up. I not very experienced with cars so I'm baffled. HELP!!

hahaha mine does the same thing and i put a newer ka-e motor in mine. took out all the ac and everything. ive been working on the problem though. so far....make sure you spark timing is set, if you dont know how to do that tell me. you did put new plugs and wires right? chech your vacuum lines the ones against the fire wall. make sure you dont have any exhaust leaks and check your o2 sensor. and last set your idle. mine idles normal now, but it sounds rough? the biggest problem was the egr. make sure it is hooked up right and thier are no holes in the tube. good luck let me know if any of this helps you.

It is most likely the idle valve on your engine. Mine is having the same problems right now, untill I fix it very soon. What is most likely happening is that the valve is sticking open and most likely, the computer is thinking that the car is still cold so it is idling high. The part is around $120 from what the mechanic that did the diagnostic check on the 240. If I can find a picture, I can show you a way to check and see if it is the valve or not. What you do is pinch this hose and if the engine cuts off, that means the valve has gone bad.

i just did an sr swap and i cant get my idle to be normal anymore either. i set it and 850 and ill go drive it stop at a stop light and its at 1200+ so i turn it down a little then it drops to 550 and stays there. i cant tighten it or loosen it to make it change at all. pisses me off.

Thanks for the replys. At least now I have something to go on. I cranked the car and then unplugged the oxygen sensor and nothing changed so I figured maybe it is bad. So then I checked the computers diagnostics counted the little lights and all and the code said no problems were detected. Crazy huh. I took and sprayed starting fluid all around the engine to check for vacuum leaks and found none. The screw on the throttle cable isn't making it idle high either. I noticed the screw that you use to do the diagnostics on the computer was also used to adjust the idle so when I got done reading the code I turned it down a little then restarted the car and it made no difference. So now I'm going to try to figure out where some of those other things you guys were talking about are and check them. Well I better act like I'm working. What does the idle valve look like?

Sorry about these being big pictures but here, wait untill the engine is good and warm. FIRST STEP: Take a pair of plyers and squeeze this tube I indicated in the picture. If the engine shuts off, you will know if your idle valve is either sticking or has gone bad. Here is the idle valve: Picture 1 Picture 2

go to the junk yard and get a maf. and swap them and see what happens. also if u have a ka24de in ur 89 make sure that the 16 body harness wires are corect they should be color matched. they are located behind the glove box. also change all ur air filters and also check ur throttle cable. when i swaped my motor it idled up and down for the first 5 min after that it was cool.
timing could also impact the idle

Hey this guy told me that because I used an engine out of an automatic and changed it over to work in my 5 speed that the computer would make it idle weird. He kinda big times alot so I don't know. The only difference between the motors should have been where it hooks to the tranny I would think. But I'm not sure.
