RX-8s dont do it stock, but if they are tuned most likely they will. A lot of rotary cars(RX-7s)do, and its ear bursting

I used to own a integra gsr, and when driving it hard once I hit the rev limiter for a few seconds and shifted and popped out a flame. The only thing I could think of besides running rich, was that when hitting the rev-limiter it cut the ignition but not the fuel, and when the fuel ran through the test pipe I had, it ignited from the heat. That could be totally wrong, but oh well, just thought it was a possibility

Actually the Mis-Firing system used on rally cars is not the same as simply backfiring out the tailpipe.

The misfiring system is also known as an Anti-Lag System(ALS) and is used to keep the turbo boost up when the driver gets off the throttle. When the engine computer detects the throttle being let off enough, it opens the injectors longer to richen up the mixture, and adjusts the timing by about 40 degrees so that the spark ignites the mixture when the exhaust valve is open. Since the combustion occurs in the exhaust system, it keeps the turbo spinning at high-speed.

This gives better acceleration coming out of a corner, since the boost is still high and the engine will reach peak output faster.

Yes, I forgot to quote s14.5boy since he was talking about the STI in his neigbourhood that made the loud popping sounds.

That's actually how it works in an engine, regardless if it has ALS or not.
