240/248 cam swap questions (new questions as of 07/30/09)

so i did a little searching and all i could find was this

https://www.s-chassis.com/forums/sho...2F248+cam+swap

but it wasn't really any help. so i apologize if the answer is out there. i have a '95 SE, and just got some 240/248 cams to put in, question is does it need any retuning or timing adjustment? or is it just a direct "plug and play" swap?

ya i considered the 248/248, but research and "expert" opinions point more towards the 240/248 for better gains, and you gota ask yourself "why didn't nissan start with 248/248 cams instead of 240/248?" anyways maybe i'll check the 248/248 some day down the road.

Ok, I'm reviving this thread instead of starting a new one. I am finally getting around to my 240/248 cam swap into my '95 s14 and had a couple questions. First just wanted to double check and make sure this one is intake:

and this one is exhaust:

Also, is there any way to double check and make sure these are actually s13 cams that I bought? The only identifying marks I can see are a "1" (or maybe its an "I") on the exhaust and a "4" on the intake, and also both have a "53F" seen here:

Also I have a few noob questions (I searched but was unable to find the answers to):

1. Would someone mind running me through the steps of doing this swap? As I have never removed/installed cams before (although it looks fairly simple)

2. I read the crank needs to be set to TDC, how do I do this?

3. Also as far as positioning the cams correctly, I read that there is a mark on each gear and on the timing chain, and just line up the marks, is this correct?

"Also, is there any way to double check and make sure these are actually s13 cams that I bought? "

Ok, so here is a real thinker for ya:

the cams currently in my '95 s14 have ORANGE intake cam and GREEN exhaust cam. the cams are in the correct position because the dowel pin on the intake (orange) lines up with with lobes on cylinder #1, while the dowel pin on the exhaust (green) cam does not line up with cylinder #1 lobes.

now, the cams I bought (should be from a '92 s13): intake cam (the one that the dowel pin lines up with cylinder #1 lobes) is GREEN, while the exhaust cam (dowel pin does NOT line p with cylinder #1 lobes) is ORANGE.

so, question is what is what? did they swap colors on intake/exhaust cams between the s13/s14? or are we all sure that the dowel pin lining up with cylinder #1 lobes actually means that that cam is the intake cam????

I just answered my own question. I would seem the colors are switched between different years, so always rely on the dowel pin position.

So, if you were trying to tell if the cams you have lying around are s13 or s14, well on s14 the intake is orange, while on s13 the intake is green. And the intake cam is always the one where the dowel pin lines up straight in line with the lobes for cylinder #1.
