if it's just a temp fix to keep water out until you get a new hatch, then just do whatever you can. pieces of sheet metal from home depot/lowe's riveted and sealed or even garbage bags. seriously whatever it takes.
as for the tint, just get the glass on the new hatch tinted. cutting and replacing glass yourself is no easy task unless you have the proper tools. you can't just simply 'take' it out and 'put' it into the new hatch. messing up on that will cause even more water leaks.

yeah a glass shop isn't all that expensive though, at least around here, it won't be as cheap as fixing the holes yourself but it won't be as much as the guy quoted you for fixing it either.
i welded in new metal in mine where there was rust and on the holes i just used fiberglass, wasn't sure if it was gonna hold in there against metal but i made the holes more jagged and pounded them inward. and when the fiberglass cured i pounded on it like crazy and pushed outward on it and it never budged.
