is the sr20det swap worth it?

hey guys whats up. i recently bought my 240sx. its a 1990 with only 51k miles. i like the car its really fun to drive. but im really into speed also. i also own a 92 talon tsi awd. my talon needs some work, needs head and tranny work. plus alot of other little things. should i keep the 240 and do the swap or should i sell it and fix my talon. i mean the only thing that kept me from selling the 240 is that no matter what it will always be more reliable then the talon. if i do the swap im doing everthing myself. i just need to buy the engine and necessary parts. so is it worth doing the swap on a 1990 car? i mean. do a lot of people still do it?

A LOT of people do the swap..or plan on doing it. What are you planning on doing with the car?

you should have better luck. i remember my old DSM. i loved it, but it broke down way too often and always in 3's. haven't had any problems with the 240 or the SR. just do some searching on these forums, and the NICO forums and you'll get a good understanding of what you'll want to do with your car. and there are a lot more planners than do-ers, but nothing would ever get done if nothing was ever planned. enjoy the 240!

black top comes with a ball bearing turbo I know that, plus I believe the red top is a s13 and a black top is a s14 or s15, if I am wrong please someone correct me

hey yeah they both come in a s13. From what i have seen the red tops have 5 more hp and they come out of a silvia, and the black tops come out of a 180. but i dont know if i am right or no but that is what i have seen.

both came from silvia's. only black tops have a variable valve timer likt new toyotas. not really necessary and its a more expensive swap than red top b/c of extra wiring.

0mfg!! holy mass mis-information, batman! u guys, when using the terms "redtop" and "blacktop", ur referring to the S13 SR20DET. there is NO "redtop", "greentop", "rainbowtop", etc for the S14 or the S15. thus, they are simply S14 SR20DET and S15 SR20DET (and yes, i've heard of the mythical "bluetop" from the Nismo 270R). yes, they both have black valve covers, but there aren't two different motors for the S14 and S15 generations like there are for the S13. i've posted this about a half million times already (and it's a wonder one of u haven't seen it yet):

http://www.sr20detinfo.com

while it may not be 100% accurate (mostly about the dates of the production of the cars), the engine info is pretty much on target. now, read, be educated, and go forth and share the knowledge.

just to clear something up, i think what is meant is not that the SR is "overrated", but rather "overhyped". whether or not the hype is justified, that's up to the observer. either way, it can still put a big, stupid grin on ur mug. it's kinda like when people talk about hondas, the first thing u here is B16B or B18C (the JDM civic and integra type-r motors, respectively). almost like there isn't any other option for making power in a specific car (since most n00b's or outsiders wouldn't know what else there is out there and would just feed off of whatever's popular). i guess it's a matter of whether or not it's worth it to u. there are many arguments about motor A versus motor B with respect to initial cost, final cost, parts availability, ease of installation, legality, size, weight, potential for 1300RWHP, blah blah blah blah. whatever, i'm not getting into all that crap. i'll just say that it depends on what ur budget is, what ur time table looks like (incase something has to be imported), what expertise u have (or whatever shop u choose has), and ultimately, what u really want. ****, i've seen 2JZGTE's in 240s. i've read on a forum somewhere that some guy who dropped a VG30DE in his S14 and was in the process of figuring out how to get the TT on there. what else? who knows, there might be a 13B (RX-7 motor; that's right, rotary) sitting in a 240 somewhere. and most of us have seen the small block V8 in one (i've see a guy in a thread here say that he had one, i've seen one on ebay, both S13's, and there's a guy on NICO named Aries that has a V8 in his S14).

to make a long story short, before u spend king kong loot on a setup because XYZ said it was the best, know for urself that it's what u want. some go KA-T, some CA, some SR, some RB (and some go w/completely different **** as i said before). the best decision is a well informed one.
