Newbie w/important question

Hey everybody,

Very helpful forum here.

Now for the layout, my Dad and I are doind a "project" together, and decided to go w/s13 and sr20det swap. The main reason is because we were going to go w/CRX, and b16, but my Dad doesn't like the fact that it's a little 1.6.

Ok, so when my Dad and I go to look at front clips in Sacramento, what are some things to look out for in the engine. How would I know if the turbo is still good??

We will do a compression check, and it's supposed to be around 155psi??

And lastly, I know that we will put in an aftermarket clutch, but are these engines relatively strong, I'm asking this because I want to know that if somebody has raced w/this engine previously, that it will still hold up strong for many more miles.

Thanks to all

hey. these forums don't get overloaded w/posts like some of the other ones, so it'll take a little time for one of our resident experts to get w/u. i'd suggest hitting up SHIFT_Lock for the info. he's pretty knowledgable about JDM motors and whatnot. if you want a quick (and possibly technically inaccurate answer), i can say that from looking around and reading, some things to check would be compression, the turbo, and the oil pan. what to check for in the turbo? play in the compressor shaft? the oil pan? damage. oh yeah, see if they can start it up for you and find out if they provide warranties on the motors they sell. beyond that, i can't be sure. i'm automotively challenged. anyhoo, just wanted to give u a response cuz i know it sux to feel like ur being ignored...

i hardly know anything, but check the turbo and pipes for cracks? and check if it still sucks in air.

Thanks for the responses,

So is the reason you check the oil pan just to make sure it's not dented, as to upset the oil pressure??

I'll try to get a hold of ****-lock

Thanks

well you're free to scour the sacramento junk yards all ya like but i doubt you'll find an SR20DET in there. i'm not aware of that motor being in any car over in america. so unless someone wrecked a car they swapped one into you're prolly outta luck.

im still pretty new to these cars too, honda for life, but that changed recently when i drove my first RWD. im been getting ready to buy a 180sx and have been researching the swap. i contacted cartune motorsports and those guys have their **** on lock!!! i'd say check them out, they just had an article in the new import racer. now if i only lived in cali id be set. all the shops in the northwest are dip****s when it comes to anything but hondas.

and the world of "drifting ricers" begins...

nothing against u pinoix, but someone who says "HONDAS FOR LIFE" and wants to buy a 240 is surely a ricer.

's advocate time:

i disagree. i don't think that just because someone likes hondas, but wants a 240 he is a ricer. i say, give the guy a chance and see what he's about. i mean, if the 240 gets slower and slower and tackier and tackier as the 'mods' pile up, then yeah, ricer. but to come out the gates with a general presumption isn't fair. hell, i love muscle cars (classic and current) and i still dig the 240. damn, does that make me a pro-domestic, only-drive-fast-in-a-straight-line mullet? am i gonna ****** out the shocks/springs and drop in leaf springs? am i gonna put mags on it and run straight pipes from the header to a side exhaust? not necessarily. besides, there are some honda guys out there who can put it down at a drag strip/autox/track just like there are nissan ricers. the moral of the story, before we start boiling the water, make sure that the rice is there first...

From: in my car!
basic principals on buying a sr. venus is a good start they offer good prices and will back up any miss faults of there part.

ok turbo no more than 1mm of shaft play.
oil pan. every sr has a dent in the pan just a fact of life. but very important as to how big a dent and if the dent is away from the oil sucker. there is a bigger square in the almost middle of the oil pan. the rest are a bit smaller. make sure that in no way that the dent is in this location.

try to get a clip with no extra goodies. i know this sounds crazy but if the car was stock then most likely it wasn't run to death on a daily basis.

also make sure all the important parts are there and in good shape . the cam angle sensor, igniter chip, ecu and harness.
check the tranny if it's a clip? you say. see if there is any gear oil leaking between the tranny and block or around the crank pulley in front. this is to see if any front or rear main seals are gone out. or a tranny seal either way a leaky seal is no good.i would replace them anyways but if they have been leaking for a while it may have caused damage to the motor.

what else? also look inside the the oil cap to see how dirty it is, dont buy a low milage motor that has death rot black oil in it. most likely it has never had a oil change and things will fall apart before to long.

and compression check as you stated is good.

if it's just a motor set make sure they didn't pull the motor out by the fuel rail. i know this sounds insane but i've seen it a bunch.

also if it's a clip make sure that the cluster is in it.

and try to get a nonwrecked clipa s you would use the radiator. the ka radiator can be used but is kinda odd. especially if you are going to use the stock SMIC. the cold pipe impeads on the radiator hose.

well i think thats about it i may have missed some stuff. email me if need any other info that i have forgot.
