Lift needed for swap?

Is a lift needed for an engine swap? I have been looking at scissor lifts, which aren't all that expensive. If needed, I would probably buy one.

He's talking about a lift that raises the entire car.

And no, you don't need a lift, just a cherry picker/engine hoist and some friends.

Haha that made me laugh. Now that my dumb friend is a dumb answer.

I hope you didn't try to take out your engine with a scissor lift. I know it is possible with a porsche because the engine comes out the bottom but a 240sx. You must be a good mechanic.

Well yeah that is what I am going to do. You can't take it out from the bottom.

getting a car lift might be helpful, but it's not necessary. if you need to get underneath, buy some of the "wheel ramps" i dunno the exact term, ot regualr jackstands. i know someone that did the entire swap with just a hoist in their garage

What about:
1)rasing the car in jackstand
2)putting a jackstand underneat the engine/trans along with
some wood pieces or another jack
put preasure onthe engine and trans (upward)
4)take all bolts holding the engine
5)lower engine to the floor
6)remove by using the jack's wheels
7)bring new engine into position on top of the jacks
8)lift engine into position, maybe lower the car
9)bolt into place
Good method? I saw the people from some magazine do it like this, and it was ina shop in CA were they've done over 20 swaps and they do them in 6 hours!

yea... they suck

Fixed them a little, this is pretty basic though:
1)raise the car with a jack
2)put a jackstands underneath the engine/trans (only to help with removing trans/engine mounts)
4)take all bolts holding the engine
5)Hoist the engine out with lift (easier to do when the car is back down on the ground)
6)clean up engine bay etc
8)lift new engine into position with lift, tranny first
9)bolt into place, install parts, connect wiring etc etc

dude, most magazines suck... just because they do it that way in "6 hours" doesnt mean ****. Whoopdeedo they can do it quick, and twenty swaps for a shop isnt a lot, at all... i know a guy that just finished his 20th swap

I would think that is the only way to put a new engine in. Take the old one out by removing the bolts and putting the new one in.

Well 6 hours is good if done right. But I am sure that after your first or second time doing one, most people can do it in 6 hours too.

Exactly, doing it right is what counts. Dont rush sh*t just to be done in 6 hours. Plus, tha'd be pretty hard to do unless you had EVERY part and tool ready to go.

I also found out that it is easier to drop the engine out of the bottom instead of pulling it out. There would be some different procedures to do it, but you just need the car high enough to get the engine out from under it
