how do you check timing on an rb25det

i was wondering which type of timing gun needs to be used on an rb25det, even an sr20det for that matter. reason i ask is cause of the direct coils. i was told there is a white wire in back of the valve cover on the rb25 that you use. if this is correct do i use an inductive clipped timing gun or direct hook up.

gotcha. i was thinking of using the old ka spark plug wire sticking it in and attach the other end to the coil then clip the inductive clip to it.

i just got back from 3 different mechanic shops none of them knew what they were doing with my sr20...i wanted to test my timing and see if it was at 15 degrees cuz i believe thats how it should be, right? they had the timing gun but told me that it wont work with this engine..do they not not know what they're doing? or do sr20s require a different timing gun? anyway i thought this may help my idling problem but they told me that it has nothing to do with it.does it?

its direct coils, so just take an old plug wire stick it in the plug and attach it to your coil. then take the timing light clip and attach it to your old plug wire. you can use the ka plug wire. there is also a wire in the back that your supposed to use but it gave me some really messed up readings.
